A saying comes to mind. "Once you leave, you can never come back again."
Sadly that is all to true in the gaming world.
I have made mention here and there about gaming, but I don't think I have ever delved on how very much of a love affair I have with my memories of... EverQuest. I have a website that used to be dedicated to it, it is more of an overall gaming site now though. I keep meaning to redo the site back to a love of gaming site and *actually* finish it. But... well I just don't have the love of gaming that I did while I was in Everquest.
My first foray into online gaming was in the form of Mechwarrior 3 where I played on the MSN zone for about a year. That is where I was introduced to EQ. The ex bf and I played EQ around the clock, you could seriously say we were addicted in no small way. EQ was correctly nicknamed Evercrack for a reason. But... it was so much fun. The music was gorgeous first of all, no matter where you went in the game there was music. I have every song from the game and listen to them now and then when I reminisce and each song seems to have a memory attached to it. I can recall being in this zone or that hearing the music and it is so bittersweet.
Sadly I thought I was getting burned out on EQ after several years of playing it, raiding day in day out 7 days a week. I left it to try a new game that was in Beta at the time. That game was Star Wars Galaxies aka SWG aka Sony Online Entertainments biggest failure.
There was no content to SWG but as the player base we created it ourselves. I was on the Intrepid server where Groovefest started it all, the game was fun but only in that it was supposedly about Star Wars, loosely based as it was, and there were so many people in the game. I seriously was never bored in the game, but I always missed my EQ, I tried to go back to EQ so many times while in SWG, but the game had moved on and left me in the dust. I would go back in and I was lost, unable to remember even what I needed to do to heal or buff... and my friends list was empty. It seemed everyone else had moved on also. :(
After the failure of SWG I went on to World of Warcraft... let me just say I should have saved the money, it really was a waste of my time and life. I tried the sequel to EQ, Everquest 2. That just made me sad because it was supposed to take place after the destruction of the Everquest worlds. I caught sight of Luclin one night while out hunting with my hubby and I almost cried, it was so odd to feel such emotion for a video game. But seeing the destroyed world and remembering all the fun that I had on that world really made me sad. I quite EQ2 just after that as I realized that it just was not the same as Everquest.
I currently play Lord of the Rings Online, it is fun, it is *close* to being like Everquest but still missing... something... I don't know if it is the niavete of it being my first game, or perhaps I have become jaded by my wants out of a game. Or maybe it is just that I am a bit touched in the head about my gaming ;). But whatever it is, whenever I hear my phone ring (Plane of Sky) or a text message (Everquest opener) or or one of those days where I just want to hear EQ music, I get transported back to those days of sitting in The Overthere and praying that a dragoon doesn't find us, or exploring the Plane of Nightmare, or just sitting in Plane of Tranquility and letting the music take me away.
What I would do to be able to go back to those days and enjoy Everquest again, to explore the worlds, to join in the huge raids. The fun, the glory, the many many friends I made there.
Ringtones: What's yours and how often do you change it?

What else would an ex Everquest addict have as their ring tone but the opening music? :P I have Plane of Storms as my incoming text message tone, except for the one incoming for my hubby, he gets the sound of a cleric casting buffs from DAOC :D.
Other than changing from the default crap that Motorola gives you on their new phones, I have only changed my ringtone once... to this and so it will stay :D

Listening to this song I am instantly transported back to Luclin, remembering all the days of killing in Plane of Nightmare, the raids, the absolutely huge raids and making so very many friends.
There is no game since that has effected me the way that EQ effected me, there is no game that promoted friendships the same way, the camaraderie, the joy of taking down that one boss that took so many days to learn.
